If you’re wondering, “what should my family do today?” I know how you feel. We used to spend our weekends at home just staring at each other and THAT made us feel absolutely miserable.
Plus, when you have toddlers it doesn’t make it any easier to do something fun before they’re sleepy or hungry again. So, the next best thing to do is to have a family fun night right at home!
How Can I Have Fun with My Family at Home?
Now, if most of your weekends are spent sitting on the couch (like we were) then you probably don’t think it’s really possible to have fun at home.
But it is! You just have to get a little creative if you’re stuck in the house all weekend with your little ones!
Today, I’ll share my favorite ways we’ve learned to spend family time together with our toddlers so that you can too!
20 Family Fun Night Ideas to Do At Home With Toddlers
1. Paint with your kids
I love simple kid art projects. And you can hang it beautifully in your home.
2. Play a fun game
Kids love games like Hide ‘N Go Seek, scavenger hunts, flash card games, and more! It’s a great way to encourage them to get off their tablets, too.
3. Bake cookies from scratch
I love baking cookies from scratch. It’s a fun and frugal activity we enjoy doing as a family. And of course, the best part is when you actually get to eat it!
4. Go camping in your backyard
This is a wonderful way to reconnect with your loved ones. I mean, who can resist s’mores, right?! Plus, you can even make it a device-free night!
5. Invite family & friends over
You can host a potluck so everyone can bring their kids and favorite dish. Or, you could take it a step further and choose a theme for your potluck (for example, Mexican fiesta, breakfast for dinner, seafood, finger foods, etc). Let the kids play while you enjoy the company of your loved ones!
6. Have a water fight
When the temperature outside rises and you want to get out of the house, why not have a water fight? It’s a creative way to cool down and have a little fun too!
7. Go to the beach
If you’re lucky enough to live near a fabulous beach, this is something you can do just about every weekend that won’t cost you a dime.
8. Take pictures of your kids
Kids grow up fast, so I decided to invest in a Nikon DSLR camera to capture every milestone. Plus, I save money on pictures since I don’t need a photographer. We’ll sometimes go to a state park and have a mini photo shoot, and my kids LOVE it!
9. Have a picnic
Get the kids out of the house and spend a few hours playing in the sun. Don’t forget to pack some food to bring along with you to the park.
10. Go to the Zoo
During the summer months, there are always free admission days on holidays like Mother/Father’s Day, Labor Day, and more. And during the winter months, admission is much cheaper. But my favorite time of the year to take the kids to the zoo is when all of the Christmas lights are on display!
11. Go biking, hiking, or outdoor exploring
You can pull out your stroller and go for a walk as a family. If you have bikes, that’s even better! Simple outdoor activities like these are fun and healthy for the whole family.
12. Gaze at the stars at night
On warm summer nights, after the sun goes down, we’ll sometimes go outside just to look at the stars. It’s so much fun to see the kids react to the moon and the stars.
13. Visit a free museum, art show, or art festival for kids
Most museums will have a free admission day, typically on Sundays, and special events that include activities just for kids.
14. Explore your local library
You never know what books, videos, and music you may find! Plus, at most local libraries you can surf the internet for free, while your kids bury themselves in books.
15. Create a scrapbook
Scrapbooking is a fun way to get all those pictures off the internet and into a DIY photo album that you can cherish and display in your home. You can compile all of your memories in one place and get your kids involved. This little project will keep your family busy all weekend long!
16. Go house-hunting
If you dream of one day owning a home, drive your family around different parts of town to visit model homes!
17. Get organized
Start in the kids’ bedroom so they can help out too! You can get rid of toys they don’t play with, clothing they’ve outgrown, and give their room a fresh look by rearranging furniture.
18. Make a craft from Pinterest
Go through your Pinterest boards and make something that inspired you with your kids. From recipes to DIY projects, homemade gifts, and kids crafts – you’re sure to find one or more ideas to try as a family!
19. Clean your car inside and out
If your family car is anything like ours, then it tends to get dirty pretty fast. We like to wash our car at home because it’s cheaper than going to a car wash.
Plus, it’s fun to get the whole family involved! And you can use your own vacuum (with an extension cord) to clean every crumb, nook, and cranny.
20. Watch Netflix together
When all else fails, this my favorite go-to thing to do. We’ll turn on a kid-friendly movie, order a pizza, and make popcorn! Many times, the kids won’t make it half-way through the movie without falling asleep which is AWESOME for hubby and me!
